Winter is in full swing, and that means one thing: it’s so cold that going outside physically hurts. That frosty bite of the wintery wind on your nose and cheeks isn’t the only way the air hurts your face. The bone-dry air of the season isn’t doing anyone skin’s a favor, either.
But don’t worry, ladies. You don’t have to wait for the spring thaw to have soft, comfortable skin again. With these simple ways to level up your skin-care game, your skin will be able to stand up to the winter weather.

Simple Ways To Level-Up Your Skincare Game
Check the Timing of Your Moisturization
As we said, the dry air is murder on our complexions. So naturally, moisturization is essential when it comes to finding ways to level up your skin-care game in the winter. However, slapping moisturizer on your face willy-nilly isn’t guaranteed to be effective.
For example, throwing moisturizer on your face when your skin is too dry will be rendered ineffective by the loads of dead skin cells on your face. However, putting it on when your face is dripping-wet won’t work, either. Your best bet is to apply it after you’ve gotten out of the shower and towel-dried your face.
Also immediately following after applying your toner, when your skin is still slightly damp. Especially if your moisturizer contains hyaluronic acid, this is a must. So make sure your skin is freshly toned and damp or steam from the shower or a handy facial steamer.
Rethink Makeup Removal
The dry air isn’t the only adversary standing between you and perfect skin. Your makeup, though gorgeous, can cause a pore-clogging mess if you don’t remove it properly. Here are some quick tips to keep in mind when it comes to makeup removal:
- Try double-cleansing: washing your face once with a stronger, oil-based cleanser and then again with a gentler cleanser.
- Allow the cleanser to sit on your face for a few minutes before you rinse it off.
- Use cotton pads instead of balls.
- Use cleansers intended for makeup removal. Not makeup wipes—they tend to not get everything off your face, contributing to pore-clogging. If you use wipes, wash your face with a cleanser afterward.
Double-Check Your Products’ Ingredients
It may seem backward, but not every ingredient in every skin-care product is good for your skin. For example, if you look at your ingredients list, you may find ingredients such as aluminum, mineral water, and a whole slew of preservatives that would win you a round of Scrabble. (We’re looking at you, methylchloroisothiazolinone.) Your best bet is to opt for products with natural ingredients such as:
- Jojoba oil
- Sweet almond oil
- Grapeseed oil
- Retinol
- Organic shea butter
- Hyaluronic acid
Avoid parabens, synthetic fragrances (parfum), and most silicones. My favorite way to check if the products I’m using are toxic and not the safest, I check their toxicity rating with the EWG app. You can scan the barcode with their app to see how safe or unsafe your fave products are, or simply type in the name of a product on their main website. You might be very surprised to find out the truth of what’s in the products you use and how it can not only affect your skin but your overall health.
Additionally, you can’t go wrong with the antiaging benefits of essential oils. Just be sure to put them in a carrier oil before you put them on your face and make sure the oils you use are ethically sourced, pure, and from a trustworthy company
Be Consistent
Whether your skin-care routine takes 5 minutes or 30, consistency is key. After all, dry air, dirt, and dead skin cells meet your face every day. If you keep on top of your routine, your skin will thank you. Trust me.
