When you’re a single mom, Christmas can be tough, but you’re strong enough to make it work. Get a helping hand with these great tips for budgeting for Christmas when as a single mom.

Be realistic

Every year, thousands of people get themselves into unnecessary debt to ensure ‘the best Christmas ever’. Is it the best Christmas ever if you’re still paying for it in June? When planning for the holidays, keep your ambitions realistic. Set a budget that you can work with for gifts, socializing, holiday food and decorations that you can work with.

Christmas should be about quality, not quantity, so be honest with your children and ask them for the things they really want, and even limit to a certain number of presents if you wish. This will help to manage their expectations so they know what to expect on Christmas Day.

Learn how to make savings

Even with a small budget, you’ll be surprised at how far you can make it stretch. There are are some great ways to save money on Christmas gifts, including using discount coupons and getting your shopping done on Black Friday and other pre-holiday sales. If you can slash the cost of everything on your shopping list, you’ll have money left over for extras or to put towards other holiday costs.

Offer help to your kids

Even if they don’t have their own money, your kids will want to give you something for Christmas – and you should let them. Help them out by showing them some affordable Christmas gift ideas such as an ‘I love you Mom’ necklace or some affordable pampering treats. They could even make their gifts as a way to show how much they care.

Take on a holiday side hustle

If funds are really tight this year, you could make some extra money by finding a side hustle to give your holiday budget a boost. There are some great side hustle ideas that are perfect for single moms, so why not use your talents to make some extra cash?

Make it memorable

Making memories with your kids can be far more valuable than any gift you give, so instead of worrying about having to spend a fortune to make Christmas special, think of other things you can do instead. Whether it’s going caroling in your neighborhood or taking them to see Santa, capture those happy memories and put them in an album that they can look back on one day and remember the amazing holidays they had.
