Help! My Kid Has An Undiagnosable Health Issue

Hey mamas!

There is something I wanted to bright up on the blog today in regards to health issues in our kids.  It’s not always fun to talk about and can be a bit controversial for some. But if you have ever said  “Help! My kid has an undiagnosable health issue!” Then this post is for you. Continue on for some helpful tips.

Help! My kid has an undiagnosable health issue

Did you know that there are lots of health issues that doctors simply cannot diagnose? Fibromyalgia is a brilliant example of this. While this is technically a diagnosis, it’s also a cop-out. You see fibromyalgia is a diagnosis given to anyone experiencing unexplained chronic pain anywhere in the body. The young and the old can develop this condition and doctors have no idea what causes it or even how to treat it. So, for all intensive purposes, if you hear this word from a doctor, they haven’t diagnosed you with anything at all. It’s their way of saying: “we don’t know.”

Unfortunately, a non-diagnosis like this can be incredibly frustrating for parents, particularly if it’s their kid who has the health issue. It could be causing them discomfort or the symptoms might seem to suggest something sinister. Here’s what to do if you find yourself in this situation.

Don’t Panic!

Nine times out of ten an undiagnosed health issue is going to be nothing. We can look at the example of blackouts. Your child might be having an issue with every so often almost losing consciousness. When speaking about it with you, they might have described the world going dark and their muscles feeling weak. Immediately, you’re jumping to horrific conclusions from a brain tumor to a serious mental condition. However, this symptom can also be caused by a growth spurt. If kids are growing at a phenomenal rate, it can cause an issue like this, so there’s no need to always jump to the worst conclusion. Simply bring it up with your Pediatrician.

It Could Be An Allergy

Doctors can’t always diagnose an issue as an allergy, and they certainly won’t be able to tell you what’s the cause of the reaction. That’s why you need to speak with allergy specialists. An allergy can present itself in very weird and wonderful ways from a rash to hair loss to a fever. It’s enough to scare any parent half to death but once you figure out what your kid is allergic to you’ve already won half the battle. Let’s just hope it’s not the beloved family pup.

It Will Probably Go Away By Itself

Most medical symptoms do disappear without any help from a doctor or even medicine within about two weeks. That’s why if symptoms aren’t changing or getting worse you should wait about two weeks before you go and consult a doctor. The chances are that it’s nothing and there are lots of examples of things on the body that popup for basically no reason at all like petai. These are little red dots about the size of pinpricks that can pop up for a variety of reasons and are hardly ever sinister. For instance, a few months back my son had little warts popping up all over his body and I could not figure them out, but it turned out to only be harmless molluscum warts which are very common and no big deal. They go away on their own and don’t stick around for long. Whew! I was really beginning to worry about them. So in cases like this, it’s best to not freak out right away.

As you can see then, an undiagnosed health issue even for your child doesn’t need to send your blood pressure skyrocketing. Stay calm and remember that most medical issues have simple explanations even if they can’t be diagnosed straight away. If in doubt make sure you speak to a second doctor. It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion because while one doctor might be stumped another might know exactly what’s causing the issue.

Stay calm and mom on!

Money Habits To Make Your 2018 Sparkle

Hey, there sexy mamas!

Hope the New Year is treating you well so far! To help usher us into a what will hopefully be a fantastic year, I wanted to bring you some tips on money habits to make your 2018 sparkle! Read on for some kick-booty advice on slaying your finances this year!

Money Habits To Make Your 2018 Sparkle

Could your year have gone better financially? If 2017 was characterized by poor money decisions, having to carefully budget and worry about unexpected expenses, then there are ways to look forward to a much brighter future in 2018. It starts with a few simple steps, such as consolidating any debt and trimming your outgoings. This should leave you with more of a cushion to cover anything you didn’t budget for. Here’s how…

make your 2018 sparkle |

Check Your Utilities

It doesn’t pay to be loyal when it comes to your gas, electricity and other bills such as broadband. Despite the huge array of comparison sites out there, many of us still aren’t taking ten minutes to make sure we’re getting the best deal. Your circumstances will change over time, so the tariff that is best for you will also change. You could save up to $300 a year just for a quick check! The onus is firmly on providers to make it easy to switch so there shouldn’t be much hassle for you as a customer. Save those dollars where you can!

Pay Down Your Debt

Wouldn’t it be amazing to wake up one day completely debt free? While this is a completely achievable reality, you have to be smart about your borrowing. Many people just let their repayments tick along. What you actually need to be doing to make inroads in the amount you owe is proactively managing the situation. Consider finding a debt consolidation loan through a service like Evolution Money. That way you can reduce multiple payments into one monthly amount. If you have credit cards, try transferring the balance onto a card with an interest free period to then pay it off in the timeframe.

Seek Out Cashback

If you’re planning any big purchases this year, then make sure you go through a cashback website like Ebates. I personally use and love this site, it’s only an extra click when you’re shopping online and boom! Automatic cash back! You’ll get a percentage of what you pay back – and when it’s a larger purchase, like white goods, this is well worth doing. You can even earn cash back for purchases made via your mobile phone using their app.

Money habits to make your 2018 sparkle |

Set a No Spend Zone

You may be in the habit of small, daily purchases. They don’t cost much individually, but add them up over the course of a year and they can make a significant dent in your budget. Often these habits don’t really bring us happiness. So one trick to to set a ‘no spend week’ or even just a ‘day’ in the month where you don’t spend any money at all. Prep your lunch in advance if you work out of the home and bring a coffee your own coffee travel mug. Leave your debit card and any cash in a drawer. You may be surprised how effective this is at breaking a pattern of mindless spending.

Waste Less Food

Food waste is a huge environmental problem, and it’s also an issue for our wallets with the cost of the weekly shop rising all the time. But we can get better at correctly estimating portion sizes and find creative recipes for leftovers. Finding out information on how to correctly store food and using our freezer more can also help. Love Food Hate Waste is a great place to start.

Self Confidence For The Single Mom

self confidence for the single mom |

Happy New Year Mamas!

The start of the new year is right around the corner and with that for most brings a lot of looking at your life, resolutions, new goals, and self-confidence issues. So today I am hoping to help boost all of these areas for you! Keep on reading to see my best advice for self-confidence for the single mom!

Reflection & Looking Ahead

Pretty much everyone takes a look back on the last year of their life and a glimpse of hope for the next year on New Years. It’s a time to really think about what you’ve accomplished, or not accomplished and what you can do better going into the new year. As single moms, sometimes it’s hard to not have those negative thoughts about we failed ourselves, our kids and just didn’t do everything we feel like we should have. But you know what? None of that is true!

You are a smart, strong, hard-working mama who absolutely did her best and in no way failed anyone.  Do not look back on this last year with disappointment in yourself. You did all you could, and you rocked it! Do look ahead with hope and excitement, because this year will be even better. You can only go up from here, claim it and believe it! Let’s all move forward ready to take on 2018.

Self Confidence

I have struggled with self-confidence my entire life. It’s never been easy to feel good about myself, feel like I was good enough like I was attractive or even loved.  I am sure as single moms yourselves, you feel me.  The things we go through raising kids on our own and not having a true support system can be damaging to us. Whether you survived an abusive relationship, a toxic family, or are still dealing with mental health issues, loneliness, or any other dark cloud, your self-confidence suffers.

It is time to take back your self-love. It is time to begin to heal from those hurtful and false thoughts and learn how to feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin. I’m not just saying this to you, I’m saying this to me too! Are you ready to love yourself? I know I am!

self confidence |

My Best Advice

Spend time with yourself. Yes, really. Take a little time each day, if you can, and have some quality me time.  Take a walk outside, go to the grocery store alone, watch a movie by yourself. Just relax in your own thoughts, examine them closely and start trying to change them. Find something you enjoy doing or thinking about and run with that. Find the small things in your day and all the little things that make you smile and hold on to that joy. Allow it to leak out and spread to the rest of your thoughts and actions. Find beauty in life, and find it in yourself.

Make time for outward self-love. Give yourself a mani-pedi, do an at-home face mask. Pluck your eyebrows, do a hair mask, take a bubble bath, buy some new makeup or a hot new outfit, etc. Pamper yourself, take care of yourself. Do something that will naturally boost your confidence and help you to not only maybe look a little better but feel so much better! These things may seem silly but they are actually important. Boost those endorphins any way you can, flaunt your hot self and look and feel fabulous. Because you are!

new me |

Set new goals. This may seem like new years no-brainer, but the trick with this is to set realist goals for yourself.  That way when you didn’t go on that vacation to Bora Bora you won’t feel like you failed your goals. Set goals like, eat more greens, read more books, try a new workout, find a new game to play with the kids etc.  Be simple and realistic with your goals, so that way you can crush them and not be left with disappointment in a  years time.  Don’t fool yourself, but also don’t sell yourself short either. You know what realistic goals for yourself are, set yourself up for greatness, not failure. Make this year about what you can do, not what you wish you could do.

I hope I’ve given you some tips on making 2018 your best year yet and given you a shimmering new self-confidence!

May your year be blessed.

What Could Go Wrong This Christmas?

What could go wrong this Christmas? |

Happy Christmas mamas!

That sounded very British, didn’t it?

Christmas |

It’s getting closer and closer to the holidays. The decorations are up; presents are exchanged. There is good cheer all around you. People are making the most of the holiday season and basking in the occasion; people are having fun. So it begs the question, what could go wrong this Christmas? As single moms, this time of year can be especially challenging and I bet these scenarios sound at least somewhat familiar…

As with every big celebration throughout the year, there is always the danger of things going awry. These problems can range from the small to the calamitous, and it’s up to you to know how to deal with them should any of them arise. And, knowing the Universe, they probably will. #FAIL

A Christmas dinner of turkey and all the trimmings is a staple of any household’s yearly celebration. But, for all of the preparation you might painstakingly pour over in the upcoming weeks, there is no accounting for a potential disaster.

The turkey could end up burned; the oven could break, your uncle’s new wife could reveal that she is, actually, vegan and is wondering why you haven’t made accommodations for her needs. To avoid any of these problems, it’s a good idea to have a backup plan, should things turn out the opposite of intended. This doesn’t mean buying two of everything; there are recipes all over the internet to give you something to fall back on, should disaster strike.

It’s a shame that this has to be mentioned, but with holiday cheer also comes holiday tears. It would be nice for everyone to go through Christmas without having to deal with damage from outside influence but that is not always the case. It would be devastating to lose the gifts that I know as a single mom you did not come easily by.

Crime at Christmas can be considered anything from drunk driving to personal damage. The spirit of the season seems to stop people thinking entirely sensibly. It can be devastating for families all over the world to find themselves the victims of criminal problems. Powers McCartan offers a nice little bit of advice on dealing with all types of crime that you might fall victim to, giving you a little peace of mind should anything go wrong.

Not just Aunty Annie, obviously. For some, the holiday season means nothing but disagreements, shouting matches, and an all around sour mood. But it doesn’t need to be that way. Being single moms, it’s, unfortunately, the norm to receive some kind of criticism from family during the holiday season, but be strong and hold your own!

As much as some may try, the family still manages to get under each other’s skin over Christmas. It can be challenging to spend a whole day with a host of people that you a) don’t really know, and b) have next to nothing in common with or c) simply don’t agree with or understand your single mom lifestyle.  Disagreements are bound to arise at some point. To avoid this, there are ways to avoid confrontation, but should this fail; you can turn these negatives into positives.

The best way to approach Christmas is to assume the worst. If you are prepared for everything that can and will go wrong, you can at least have an idea of ways to solve it. Just try not to let the fear of disaster reign over all your Christmas cheer. I hope I have helped you to bravely face this wonderful time of year. I know how difficult it can be for us living the single mom life and I pray you all feel nothing but pure joy this Christmas.

Be Merry & Bright

Alternative Halloween Activities

Alternative Halloween activities |

Hey there mamas!

So it’s October, and for most families, that means getting excited about Halloween. But not all families celebrate Halloween or at least are not as into it as others.  In light of this, I will be sharing with you some awesome alternative Halloween activities that will leave you and your kinds just as happy and sugar induced as any ‘traditional” Halloween activity.

This post may contain an affiliate link. *

My family and I have never really celebrated Halloween.  It’s something we feel as Christians is not appropriate.  Halloween has become way too commercialized and way too scary in very real ways.  People don’t seem to realize that dressing up as a gruesome monster or a devil, is not cute or innocent.  I have never been comfortable with the idea of Halloween, there’s just something wrong about the whole thing and I have never understood why people are so into it and act like it’s such a fun thing. I do not see the appeal of putting up ugly, scary looking decorations, having blood on things, chopped up body parts, and ghosts etc. These things are all too real in our world and the influences are just too much.  But since it is such a huge holiday and we can’t keep our little ones from being exposed to the ideas of it, finding other ways to celebrate the season and have some fun with snacks and costumes or other exciting things is a great way to go. Here is my list of the best alternative activities to do instead of a traditional Halloween.

  • Harvest Party. – This is my personal favorite, as you can invite your friends and family, have some good food, delicious desserts and decorate with pretty fall flowers and enjoy the crisp weather together. You can always do costumes too if you want! Make them more fun, and less spooky and gruesome.  When I was growing up, our community had a Hoe Down at a friends family ranch, we had warm apple cider, a bonfire, and great food and fellowship. It was a great way to spend an October evening. Some of the little kids would come in costume, usually Bible characters or simple things like a cowgirl, or a fireman. We had music and sometimes games like bobbing for apples, or pumpkin bowling.  You can get super creative and have lots of fun with something like a Harvest party. If you’re not up to hosting, take a look in your community and see if there is one you can attend!
  • Pumpkin Carving Contest –  This is a fun idea if your kids love carving pumpkins! Last year was our first year ever carving a pumpkin and it didn’t turn out very well, but hey, we tried! Turn it into an event by inviting your favorite people, having some coffee, cider, and pie having everyone carve their own pumpkins and holding a contest! It’s sure to be a blast!
  • Corn Maze & Hay Rides – One of the best things about fall are the simple things that bring joy to both us moms and kids. Going on a nice hayride or getting lost in a corn maze are classic fall activities that you can enjoy anytime in October or November. Places like pumpkin patches offer such adventures or you could really go all out and create ones yourself in your own backyard! That’s bound to impress your peeps!
  • Church Events – most churches usually offer some type of alternative Halloween event for local families.  Whether it be Trunk or Treats, or a harvest dinner, there is usually something fun to go do at your local church. Check it out and see what they will be up to this year!
  • DIY Escape Room – Have you ever heard of or been to an escape room? Do you or your kids enjoy thrills, puzzles and being tested on the clock? Then this might be the perfect activity for you! It may take some time and materials to put together, but with a little hard work and creativity you will end up with a really fun original way to get scared on Halloween that doesn’t involve anything creepy or dead! My friends and I are actually putting one together for the youth group! So exciting! If you don’t know what you need or know where to begin when tackling a project like this, Pinterest becomes your new bff! There are kits you can buy and put together, or you can start from scratch with a few sheets, maybe a wood board or two, props, lights and your own imagination.
  • Just For The Kids – If you’re a tired mama and not really feeling like getting too involved then just keeping things simply might be best. Letting your kids have a small sleepover where you let them eat lots of sugar, letting their imaginations go wild by having them build their own candy pizza, watch a fun movie and do fall-related arts and crafts! Take a walk outside and collect pinecones, leaves, twigs and whatever else they fancy and just let them have fun.  Make a wreath for the front door or let them come up with some ideas. Just have a simple fun night at home with some friends having some good old-fashioned fall fun.

Inspired yet? I hope so! Now go have yourself a fun and fabulous fall!

Beauty Hacks For Moms

beauty hacks for moms |

Hey there mamas!

Today I will be doing a quick post featuring my top 5 picks for the best beauty hacks for us busy moms. I don’t think I need to add much more than that, so if you’re ready to begin, then lets’ jump right in!

beauty hacks for moms |

  1. Winged Liner Tricks: Do you love the look of winged liner or shadow but hate how much time and effort it takes to create the look? Well, I just learned some tricks that will save the day and our fabulous eyes! Using a bobby pin, place the pin right on the corner of your eye where you want your wing to be, then just draw your wing inside the bobby pin making an almost perfect base for a dramatic wing! Then just fill it in and bam! You can also use a clear piece of tape to create flawless winged eyeshadow! Just place the piece of tape right under your eye and create the look you want, then gently remove the tape for a perfect line!

2. Egg Whites For Your Eyes: Here is a perfect little hack for those crazy mornings where you look like the busy stressed out tired mom you are.  For a quick all natural fix you can do during breakfast, just whip up some egg whites and place them under your eyes for a few minutes to get rid of those under eye bags! So next time you’re making breakfast for the kids, remember to save some eggs for yourself for a fresh looking face!

  1. Rubber Band Manicure: Love the look of a french manicure but don’t have the time to go to the nail salon or have the money to pay for one?  Well, here is an easy way to get a perfect salon look at home! Using a rubber band, place it around your finger near the top of your nail and paint the tip of your nail and then remove the rubber band! Boom!

4. Overnight Hair & Body Mask: As moms, we don’t always have time for self-care, so this overnight trick is perfect for giving silky soft hair and skin with almost zero time! Simply slather on some coconut oil all over your body, right after a bath or shower would be best, and don’t forget to slather your hair in the stuff as well. Then go to bed as usual and wake up to the softest hair and smoothest arms and legs! Good deal right?

5. Set Your Hair: My last pick is a hairstyle hack that I do allllll the time! Straight after washing your hair, whether it be AM or PM, just twist your hair up all around your head and pin with bobby pins. You can also use a headband and just twist your hair and tuck it under the headband. Leave for an hour or two while you finish getting ready, or you can blast it with the blow dryer to speed things along if you have less time. Or sleep on it overnight.  When you let your hair down, you will be left with perfect waves or bouncy curls, depending on your hair type and how tight you twisted your locks.  Run your fingers through it and set with a styling hairspray and there you go! Easy peasy way to style your hair without damaging your hair or taking, even more, time to dry and use a styling device.  Thank me later you gorgeous thing. 😉

And that’s all she wrote! I hope you enjoyed my quick fix beauty hacks and that you have found a new way to keep yourself looking amazing even when you feel like crying on the inside.  Admit it, all of us moms feel this way….no lie.

Much Love,

Jess XO

The Perfect Morning Routine

the perfect morning routine |

The perfect morning routine

So I need to confess something, I am not a morning person. Nope, not in the slightest. I avoid them at all costs. But life has a way of forcing me to get out of bed and face the world far before I am ready. So when this happens, which it happens fairly often, having a perfect morning routine is very helpful.  I find that having a set routine in the mornings, especially as a mom and entrepreneur, it is key to starting the day right. Whether you are an energetic morning person, or more of a bed bug like myself, I think you can make all of these elements work for you. So here is what the perfect morning routine consists of:

  • Wake up to delight. What do I mean by that? Well to really start the day off with positivity, have your coffee already set to auto brew around the time you wake up, so the first thing you smell is hot, delicious, brewing coffee. Also, use a clock radio as an alarm if you need one, so when it’s time to get up your favorite radio station comes on instead of a loud annoying alarm. You can start your morning with music, the smell of coffee and looking out of the window to see what the day looks like and let the light into your room. Sounds perfect already! Here’s a really neat clock radio if you don’t already have one: Clock Radio

  • Breakfast. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it matters what you eat. Something healthy, filling, and delicious should be top choice. I personally make either homemade pancakes and top them with berries and whipped cream, or if I’m more crunched for time I whip up a quick superfood smoothie. Fueling up with delicious goodness is the perfect start to the day, I say. For a great pancake recipe click here.

  • Do you like to read? I find that reading something encouraging, like a daily devotional, or inspirational book of some kind while eating breakfast and having coffee is the perfect way to put some positive notes into your mind for the day. Or maybe if reading isn’t exactly your thing, just pick up your phone and scroll through some inspiration quotes on Pinterest or even just find some awesome recipes, DIY’s, whatever you like! It’s sure to start you off with a smile and a creative pep in your step! Here are links to some awesome daily reads! Book 1  Book 2

  •   Next up is getting started on the morning to-dos. Make the bed, feed the pets, brush your teeth and all that jazz. Sometimes putting on an entertaining morning tv talk show, podcast or music helps the morning chores feel less…chore like, more enjoyable and it seems to make everything go faster. Get r’ done! 😉 For a list of the 30 best podcasts streaming right now, check this out.

  • Exercise is great for the mornings because it gives you energy for the day at hand. It can be hard to find time to fit in a workout or some type of exercise, the struggle is real! So this is why throwing in a quick exercise routine before you start on the day’s work is so important. Even just 10 minutes is great. Be strong, be fierce and be well. If you need a quick workout to do each morning I highly recommend this one right here! 10 Minute Workout

perfect morning as a single mom |

Now it is time for the day to begin, and you feel ready to tackle anything this day throws at you because you now have the perfect morning routine! I wish you all wellness, happiness and the perfect morning.
