4 Scary Things That Happen If You Don’t Drink Enough Water

Scary things that can happen if you're not drinking enough water. | neveralonemom.com

Hey hey mamas,

So today I am bringing you a little bit of health advice because I know as a busy single mom it can be hard to always take care of yourself.  So as motivation to keep yourself hydrated, no matter how busy you get here are some reminders of how important it is to drink enough water.

4 Scary Things That Happen When You Don’t Drink Enough Water

As diligent Moms, we want out kids to grow up healthy, happy and well prepared for the challenges the world will bring them. If only we applied that dictum to our own lives a little more. While the life of any parent, especially a single parent is a relentless whirlwind of everyday tasks, chores, and checks, that doesn’t mean that we don’t owe it to ourselves and our children to make sure that we’re in tip-top shape. And if we look and feel great, we’ll just take that as a happy side effect.

While we all know the dangers of tobacco consumption, a sedentary lifestyle (ha, chance would be a fine thing!) a poor diet and excessive alcohol for our bodies and minds, far too few of us give the simple act of staying hydrated the respect and attention it deserves. Even the best Moms struggle when they’re not adequately hydrated, and here we’ll look at the frankly scary side effects when you don’t get enough water.

But I HATE drinking water?

A lot of people shy away from drinking water because they don’t like the taste or because other options like coffee and soda give them a better taste and a little extra zip. If you don’t like the taste it may be that you need a water filter or to switch to something flavored like this refreshing lime flavored water. Tea and coffee are okay, too in moderation but beware of sodas. They’re either loaded with empty calories or full of dangerous artificial sweeteners. There’s no substitute for good old-fashioned, crystal clear water.

Besides, here’s what happens if you don’t get enough…

You’ll look really old, really fast!

old woman | neveralonemom.com

We all love that feeling when we meet a fellow parent and they say “You don’t look old enough to have a kid his/her age!”. Failing to get enough water will cause your skin to age at an accelerated rate as your skin is unable to flush out toxins as efficiently or keep itself full and plump. You’ll also be more vulnerable to conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

You’ll struggle to lose weight

Moms are an active bunch but if you’re trying to get in shape, not drinking enough water could be impeding your goals. Staying well hydrated facilitates your body’s natural fat burning and your ability to metabolize fat is nowhere near as effective when you’re running dry (literally).

You’ll feel bloated and lethargic

Given the busy lifestyle of most hectic moms, the last thing you can afford to be is low on energy. But that doesn’t mean that you should rely on caffeine or dangerous pep pills. Staying hydrated will keep you feeling fresh and alert rather than the bloated and lethargic feeling we get when dehydrated.

You’ll struggle to concentrate

Headache? Trouble concentrating? Feeling dizzy and fatigued? Your brain is 80% water and if you don’t stay hydrated there’s no way you can expect it to work properly. Don’t wait until you get thirsty to take a sip of water as by the time your brain registers thirst, you’re already dehydrated, and even mild dehydration can reduce your concentration by around 15%.

We all want our kids to stay hydrated, and how can we do that if we’re not prepared to be great role models for them?

So let’s get our drink on and feel better when trying to keep up with our crazy mom lives!

Share this post to pass on the reminder to stay hydrated and make sure you are subscribed to my bomb mailing list! (Yes, I said bomb. Cause it’s the bomb diggity 😉 )

Could your lifestyle biz become more? | neveralonemom.com

Hidey ho mamas! (is it just me, or are my greetings getting weirder?) 😛

Could Your Small Lifestyle Business Become Something More?

The definition of a lifestyle business, as per whatis.com, is a business that predominantly only serves one person. It is a business that can operate enough to generate an income for the business owner but is unlikely to expand, take on staff, or develop beyond its basic operation. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with lifestyle businesses– they offer millions of people the chance to be their own boss, make the money they need to care for their family and experience a degree of flexibility. Many mompreneurs find themselves drawn to lifestyle businesses in an effort to spend more time with their children as well as pursuing their own career goals.

If you are the owner of a lifestyle business, then you may well feel that that’s all you need from your company. You’re quite happy as you are, and rightfully so– not everyone wants to take over the world and push their business to greater and greater heights.

However, some mompreneurs find themselves wondering if their business could expand beyond the remit of a lifestyle business. They wonder if they have hit on an idea so good, it could be expanded, developed, and grow to a point where it could no longer justifiably be called a lifestyle business? If you have ever found yourself wondering this about your lifestyle business, then this article is for you.

The scale of the challenge

It is important to be realistic in life, so let’s get the bad news out of the way first: expanding a business into a small/medium enterprise is not going to be easy. A lifestyle business does not need to do too much to generate an income for one person. Many mompreneurs run lifestyle businesses as an extension of themselves; some don’t even see the need to separate their finances or incorporate the business as an entity. As a sole trader, it’s well within your rights to do that– but if you want to expand and develop into a small/medium enterprise, then you will have to separate yourself from your business.

This means immersing yourself in a huge amount of paperwork as your business becomes a separate legal entity. It will also change your taxation requirements, which may require the assistance of an accountant to unpick.

There is also the change to your business experience, which some lifestyle business owners find challenging. You have to be sure you’ll be able to handle the input of others into a business that once only needed your opinion. Could you handle employees disagreeing with your ideas, or having to follow directions from an agency you have outsourced to? You probably can, if it’s for the good of your business, but it’s worth asking the question of yourself regardless.

Considering the prospects

It is important to be realistic when assessing your lifestyle business for its potential to grow and expand. While all lifestyle businesses can theoretically expand, that doesn’t mean it is feasible or genuinely workable. Here are a few examples to explain.

Let’s say you sell handmade jewelry online. It is your sole income and does well. You want to expand to selling to retailers and increase your product line. However, the charm for her customers is that her products are all handmade by you; if you bring in employees, your business will lose that authentic touch.

Furthermore, if you were to produce items in large quantities, you would also need to involve herself in a huge supply and distribution network: sourcing more materials, working with factories, handling distributors, and a host of other time-consuming tasks. You could do this, but given these circumstances, it’s liable to be more hassle than it’s worth.

On the flip side…

Let’s say you are a web designer. It is also your sole income and you have plenty of clients. You want to expand your business so that you can offer her service to more customers, as well as expanding the products you are able to offer. You know you will need some outside help for this; you will need to outsource custom software solutions to the likes of Svitla.com so as to expand your product range, and you will likely need to hire more web designers as employees.

This is feasible because your personal touch on each design is not vital, provided the coding and overall production is good. You do not need to construct an entirely new production line to expand your business, nor do you have to pursue numerous outsource measures. This is a business that is viable for expansion.

Essentially, lifestyle businesses that can be expanded fulfill the following criteria:

  • You only need to outsource to one or two companies in order to expand.
  • The business is not dependent on you and your work personally.
  • You do not need to bring in an entirely new production line to expand.

If your business does not meet the criteria above, then it’s worth investigating starting an entirely new business– you can use your successful lifestyle business as a testimony to your business skills when seeking investment.

The potential benefits

While it is important to think about the potential negatives of changing your business’ nature, it’s also worth thinking about the potential benefits– because there are many of them. If your business expands into a small/medium enterprise, then you have the potential to make more money; to increase your security in the industry; even potentially to grow large enough to be of interest to potential buyers. You may even reach a point where the business can operate without much input from you, giving you endless access to a positive work-life balance, and even more time with your kids.

How to take your lifestyle business farther! | neveralonemom.com

In conclusion

If you have ever wondered whether your lifestyle business could be expanded into something more, you will now hopefully have an idea as to whether or not this is feasible. While the change can be challenging and time-consuming, there is also the potential for wonderful benefits that enrich the lives of you and your family.

The Little Touches Of A Busy Mom

Hey there mamas, hope you’re having a fine day!

We as busy moms can sometimes lose sight of the small things, and forget how much the little touches we provide actually matter to our kids. So today let’s talk all about these important little touches. Read on!

The Little Touches Of A Busy Mom

For a lot of mothers who juggle with the difficulties of managing a business and the challenges of looking after a child, there is nothing more heartbreaking than hearing your child complain about the lack of time you’ve got for them. Unfortunately, for a lot of mompreneurs, time is exactly what they struggle with on a daily basis. While every mother will tell you their child is their first priority and that they would always drop everything to look after a sick child, there are many situations where children may wrongly believe that your career is the priority. So it’s important to make sure that you’ve organized your life in such a way that your child knows he or she is what matters the most to you and that they are always in your heart. As a busy single mom, you need to be smart about how you show your affection, especially because your time is an essential part of your ability to generate the only income. With also being the only parent, your time is so much more important.

Their bedroom, their style

If you’ve been looking for an idea to treat your child, you can already forget about buying more toys or clothes. Indeed, you need to help them to create a space that is theirs at home, namely with a bedroom makeover. The bedroom can be a reflection of their personalities and tastes, and more importantly, it’s a way to show that you respect their choices. While you can surprise them with a fully planned project, it’s best to involve them from the early stages of the decor research until the selection of the furniture. As their mother, this will show them that you value their opinions. Read my post all about how to gift your kids with the best bedroom makeover ever! Click here!

Don’t let business trips come between you

Your career can sometimes take you out of town for a couple of days. If this is the case, and even though you know you can rely on a relative or a friend to look after your child, it’s important to plan something for each day. For instance, you could record your voice on a CD with professional sound mastering from a company such as Nationwide Disc for them to listen before going to bed. Or you could make a small DIY doll each time you have to spend a night away. Being apart from you is a big deal with a child, so you need to show that you still think of them.

Record yourself reading their favorite story

Quality time every day

Finally, at the end of the day, you may just want to relax in peace. But you need to block in your busy schedule time to cultivate your bond with your child. Creating quality time doesn’t mean that you can’t work during the day. This is why working from home is always the best choice for moms, but it’s still important to remember that you just need to put aside your business and household duties every evening for one hour to dedicate this time entirely to your child. Your time together can become a routine. It doesn’t have to be long if you’re busy. But you need to maintain a bond through games, reading or simply a chat about your respective days.

Bonding while busy with home business management is never easy. But you’ll find that showing your child that you value their opinions, maintain a connection even when you’re away and make a point of spending time together when you’re at home can go a long way. Finding the work/mom balance isn’t always easy, but it’s worth the effort, always. Give this post a like, or share and remember that on this crazy single mom journey, you are never alone! 🙂

10 Things You Don’t Know About Me!

10 things you don't know about me | neveralonemom.com

Hey hey hey, mamas!

How’s it going today? Well I hope! So, I wanted to do a quick fun post telling you all 10 things you don’t know about me! This is a get to know me better post and I hope you enjoy learning these 10 things about me! Let’s get right into it, shall we?

  1.  I’m not a morning person.

Like…at all. I sleep through them, as often as I can help it.  I am very much a night owl and getting up early just isn’t something my body can do very well. I’ve always been that way. It physically affects me to the point of massive headaches and nausea. So when I say no way to getting up before noon, I mean it!

2.  I’m a lyricist.

Since the age of 13, I have been an avid lyricist. Music is one of my biggest passions and the art of songwriting is something I have always felt called to do, something that flows through me like nothing else. It’s just part of me. I’m no musician and I can’t sing to save my life, so writing lyrics is what I do. I have written thousands of songs and my goal is to one day have them published to be recorded by artists and have my lyrics sung for the world.

3. I’m a chocoholic.

Hi…I’m Jesse and I’m a chocoholic….I have had quite the sweet tooth all my life, but it’s been these last few years that I have really fallen off the wagon.  As part of my nightly de-stress and unwind routine I almost always have some sort of chocolatey dessert in hind as I flick on the tv, and cuddle up under my favourite blanket and just kick it until the wee hours. It’s how I find some sort of happiness in my day, a way to end the day on a positive note.

4.  I live on a ranch.

So, if you don’t know this about me already, I live in a very remote area of Northern California.  The middle of nowhere, or the boonies if you like, but I’m definitely out in the country. No buildings, highways, or even very many people around here. It’s over an hour’s drive to the nearest town. Seriously.  My parents own ranch property like most of the folks do out here, and we have 40+ acres of land. We house horses for friends and have creeks, lots of trees, mountains and even a waterfall we like to hike to on occasion. It’s really tough to live in such a remote area sometimes, and I dream for more of a city life, but my situation keeps me here and here is my home. I was born and raised in this house, and the same goes for my son.

5. I homeschool.

It has always been my plan to homeschool my children, it’s something I firmly believe in and love. I was homeschooled growing up and it was perfect for me for so many reasons. My son is currently in the 1st grade and this is our 2nd year of officially homeschooling and some days it’s a huge challenge to get through the day, but then there are other days when it all goes smoothly and there are big smiles on both our faces. I would never consider any other option and we are in it for the long haul.

6. I suffer from depression and anxiety.

Mental and emotional health is a subject I have touched on a few times on my blog, it’s something very personal for me and I plan on blogging more about it in the future. I have had a very deep depression and anxiety issues my entire life.  It’s not something I bring up often with people, it’s my own personal struggle I keep inside myself. I manage fairly well from day to day but there are times when it’s all consuming and I find myself slumped in front of the tv for hours or days at a time dealing with very dark thoughts, emotions and internal and external pain.  It’s always there, but things trigger it for me and it becomes much more present than an average day when it’s just like a constant dull ache.  I don’t take any medications, that’s not something I feel comfortable with, I live a more all-natural lifestyle, I don’t take or use anything not made naturally from organic ingredients.  I have accepted the way I am and I try to have hope that maybe someday things may look up for me at last.

7. I am a huge geek.

When it comes to things like so-called geeky movies, tv shows or books you can count me in as a fan! My friends think I’m silly and don’t get me but hey, it’s all good. I tend to be rather obsessed with my geeky stuff, I mean you should see my “geek shelf” It’s lined all the way across the wall with books, special and collectors editions of my favorite films, actions figures and more. My biggest geeky passions are all things, J.R.R. Tolkien, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and many, many more! I even speak a little Elvish…so..yeah, I’m a big geek all right! 😛

8.  I’m writing a book.

Yes, that’s right. For the last 2 years now I have been slowly working on a little novel that I plan to have finished my next summer. It is based on my life and events that took place when I was 18. It was a very complicated time of my life and the choices I made then have changed everything about me and I feel a need to let out some of the emotions I have about it all. It’s been both fun and difficult to write, but I’m proud of myself for making it happen. Now, if only I could think of a title!

9.  I used to be a dancer.

Growing up I was a dancer and I loved it! I wasn’t very good at it, to be honest, but all the passion was there! I fumbled my way through ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop for years before turning 18 and my classes ending. Shortly there after I discovered belly dancing and I took to it like a  fly to a horse and fell in love with the amazing art form. I danced with a troupe as well as solo for almost 10 years before I was no longer able to dance. My hope is to one day pick it up again and perform or even just teach!

10. I love my blog!

Bet you didn’t know that! Haha, actually you probably did, but I wanted to make sure!

I hope you enjoyed learning more about me! I want to know more about you too, so please join my tribe of single moms and subscribe to my blog and leave me a comment!

Much love, Jess XO

The Perfect Morning Routine

the perfect morning routine | neveralonemom.com

The perfect morning routine

So I need to confess something, I am not a morning person. Nope, not in the slightest. I avoid them at all costs. But life has a way of forcing me to get out of bed and face the world far before I am ready. So when this happens, which it happens fairly often, having a perfect morning routine is very helpful.  I find that having a set routine in the mornings, especially as a mom and entrepreneur, it is key to starting the day right. Whether you are an energetic morning person, or more of a bed bug like myself, I think you can make all of these elements work for you. So here is what the perfect morning routine consists of:

  • Wake up to delight. What do I mean by that? Well to really start the day off with positivity, have your coffee already set to auto brew around the time you wake up, so the first thing you smell is hot, delicious, brewing coffee. Also, use a clock radio as an alarm if you need one, so when it’s time to get up your favorite radio station comes on instead of a loud annoying alarm. You can start your morning with music, the smell of coffee and looking out of the window to see what the day looks like and let the light into your room. Sounds perfect already! Here’s a really neat clock radio if you don’t already have one: Clock Radio

  • Breakfast. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it matters what you eat. Something healthy, filling, and delicious should be top choice. I personally make either homemade pancakes and top them with berries and whipped cream, or if I’m more crunched for time I whip up a quick superfood smoothie. Fueling up with delicious goodness is the perfect start to the day, I say. For a great pancake recipe click here.

  • Do you like to read? I find that reading something encouraging, like a daily devotional, or inspirational book of some kind while eating breakfast and having coffee is the perfect way to put some positive notes into your mind for the day. Or maybe if reading isn’t exactly your thing, just pick up your phone and scroll through some inspiration quotes on Pinterest or even just find some awesome recipes, DIY’s, whatever you like! It’s sure to start you off with a smile and a creative pep in your step! Here are links to some awesome daily reads! Book 1  Book 2

  •   Next up is getting started on the morning to-dos. Make the bed, feed the pets, brush your teeth and all that jazz. Sometimes putting on an entertaining morning tv talk show, podcast or music helps the morning chores feel less…chore like, more enjoyable and it seems to make everything go faster. Get r’ done! 😉 For a list of the 30 best podcasts streaming right now, check this out.

  • Exercise is great for the mornings because it gives you energy for the day at hand. It can be hard to find time to fit in a workout or some type of exercise, the struggle is real! So this is why throwing in a quick exercise routine before you start on the day’s work is so important. Even just 10 minutes is great. Be strong, be fierce and be well. If you need a quick workout to do each morning I highly recommend this one right here! 10 Minute Workout
