Could Your Small Lifestyle Business Become Something More?

The definition of a lifestyle business, as per, is a business that predominantly only serves one person. It is a business that can operate enough to generate an income for the business owner but is unlikely to expand, take on staff, or develop beyond its basic operation. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with lifestyle businesses– they offer millions of people the chance to be their own boss, make the money they need to care for their family and experience a degree of flexibility. Many mompreneurs find themselves drawn to lifestyle businesses in an effort to spend more time with their children as well as pursuing their own career goals.

If you are the owner of a lifestyle business, then you may well feel that that’s all you need from your company. You’re quite happy as you are, and rightfully so– not everyone wants to take over the world and push their business to greater and greater heights.

However, some mompreneurs find themselves wondering if their business could expand beyond the remit of a lifestyle business. They wonder if they have hit on an idea so good, it could be expanded, developed, and grow to a point where it could no longer justifiably be called a lifestyle business? If you have ever found yourself wondering this about your lifestyle business, then this article is for you.

The scale of the challenge

It is important to be realistic in life, so let’s get the bad news out of the way first: expanding a business into a small/medium enterprise is not going to be easy. A lifestyle business does not need to do too much to generate an income for one person. Many mompreneurs run lifestyle businesses as an extension of themselves; some don’t even see the need to separate their finances or incorporate the business as an entity. As a sole trader, it’s well within your rights to do that– but if you want to expand and develop into a small/medium enterprise, then you will have to separate yourself from your business.

This means immersing yourself in a huge amount of paperwork as your business becomes a separate legal entity. It will also change your taxation requirements, which may require the assistance of an accountant to unpick.

Woman at home on laptop |

There is also the change to your business experience, which some lifestyle business owners find challenging. You have to be sure you’ll be able to handle the input of others into a business that once only needed your opinion. Could you handle employees disagreeing with your ideas, or having to follow directions from an agency you have outsourced to? You probably can, if it’s for the good of your business, but it’s worth asking the question of yourself regardless.

Considering the prospects

It is important to be realistic when assessing your lifestyle business for its potential to grow and expand. While all lifestyle businesses can theoretically expand, that doesn’t mean it is feasible or genuinely workable. Here are a few examples to explain.

Let’s say you sell handmade jewelry online. It is your sole income and does well. You want to expand to selling to retailers and increase your product line. However, the charm for her customers is that her products are all handmade by you; if you bring in employees, your business will lose that authentic touch.

Furthermore, if you were to produce items in large quantities, you would also need to involve herself in a huge supply and distribution network: sourcing more materials, working with factories, handling distributors, and a host of other time-consuming tasks. You could do this, but given these circumstances, it’s liable to be more hassle than it’s worth.

On the flip side…

Let’s say you are a web designer. It is also your sole income and you have plenty of clients. You want to expand your business so that you can offer her service to more customers, as well as expanding the products you are able to offer. You know you will need some outside help for this; you will need to outsource custom software solutions to the likes of so as to expand your product range, and you will likely need to hire more web designers as employees.

This is feasible because your personal touch on each design is not vital, provided the coding and overall production is good. You do not need to construct an entirely new production line to expand your business, nor do you have to pursue numerous outsource measures. This is a business that is viable for expansion.

Essentially, lifestyle businesses that can be expanded fulfill the following criteria:

  • You only need to outsource to one or two companies in order to expand.
  • The business is not dependent on you and your work personally.
  • You do not need to bring in an entirely new production line to expand.

If your business does not meet the criteria above, then it’s worth investigating starting an entirely new business– you can use your successful lifestyle business as a testimony to your business skills when seeking investment.

The potential benefits

While it is important to think about the potential negatives of changing your business’ nature, it’s also worth thinking about the potential benefits– because there are many of them. If your business expands into a small/medium enterprise, then you have the potential to make more money; to increase your security in the industry; even potentially to grow large enough to be of interest to potential buyers. You may even reach a point where the business can operate without much input from you, giving you endless access to a positive work-life balance, and even more time with your kids.

How to take your lifestyle business farther! |

In conclusion

If you have ever wondered whether your lifestyle business could be expanded into something more, you will now hopefully have an idea as to whether or not this is feasible. While the change can be challenging and time-consuming, there is also the potential for wonderful benefits that enrich the lives of you and your family.

Add A Personal Gift To Your Mompreneur Business

Add a personal gift to your mom business |

Hey mamas,

Welcome to the next post in my ongoing mompreneur series! Today I will be showing you how adding a little personal gift into your mom biz could make a huge difference! Read on hot mama!

Add A Personal Gift To Your Mompreneur Business

As an entrepreneur, you naturally want to establish a close bond with your clients, partners and leads. In the business world, building up a personal connection to the people you rely on in your everyday work, whether to purchase an item, help you to establish a strategy or supply with the necessary gear, is key to a positive impression. More often than not, entrepreneurs forget to add a personal touch to their business interactions. It might seem easy to get lost in the work routine and forget about the people around you. So that’s why bringing back the concept of the personal gift is crucial to your business survival.

What’s the right personal gift?

Skills are not enough; you need to secure a personal connection

Admittedly, let’s get things clear from the start. You need a gift, but you also need to have the relevant skills for your business. Whether these relate to programming or bookkeeping, you need to remember that no personal gift can compensate a lack of skills. But similarly, being skillful and experienced is not enough to build a personal connection with your target audience. You need to add a sweet little gesture to bring back a sense of humanity into business transactions.

For loyal customers and partners

When there is a sense of loyalty that is established between you and your audience, whether from customers or partners, you will need to look for present ideas that can leverage the brand advocacy of your contacts. A simple touch such as a brand mug is a good idea to get them talking about your company naturally. You can also offer to sponsor your customers or partners activities, such as offering custom t-shirts for the in-house sports team, for example. Ultimately, you should reward their loyalty with regular discounts and offers too.

For new leads at an event

If you’re planning an event, there’s nothing better than looking for original and personal giveaways to attract and impress the audience. For all-day events, people tend to prefer elements that can help them to go through the day, aka a sweet snack or maybe some pens and paper. If you’re looking to attract people to your stand, you will need to consider offering refreshments as well as fresh foods, such as ordering a breakfast pastry buffet with hot drinks in the morning, for instance, and offering a small sandwich in a branded bag at lunchtime.

Desserts for sale at a business event |

For new clients

Last, but not least, there’s the new client who has just passed an order and whom you want to retain. You’ve got a lot of options to make things feel more personal here. You can add a thank you card to the parcel, for instance, if there is a delivery planned. For businesses that are likely to get several orders from the same client throughout the year, such as takeaway or beauty products, you can pack a discount card to encourage future orders. Another good idea is to add samples of your other products so that you can help your clients to discover your full range.

Writing personal note |

In short, don’t believe the idea that the digital revolution has removed the need for a personal and human touch. Now, more than never, you need to remain your audience that they are more than a buyer to you.  Are you ready to take over the mom biz world? Go and rock it mama!

The Top Skills A Mompreneur Needs

The top skills a mompreneur needs |

Howdy mamas!

Next up in my mompreneur series I will be writing about the top skills you will need as a rock star mompreneur. Read on to find out what skills you will need in your arsenal of awesomeness.

The Top Skills A Mompreneur Needs

Being an entrepreneur and a single mom is no easy feat. Both raising children and running a business are full-time commitments, and they have a lot of similarities. You have to nurture them to help them grow so you can be proud of them and yourself. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur in the modern world, you need to get yourself some tech skills. You might run a business selling knitted soft toys or all-natural bath products, but you need the technical knowledge to hold up the backbone of your business. These tech skills are excellent choices to learn if you want to be a better entrepreneur.

Coding Skills

If you’ve paid any attention to the latest advice on skills for the future, you’ll have heard about coding. There are plenty of projects trying to get kids interested in coding, as well as some specifically aimed at girls and women. Learning a coding language can give you a useful skill, and learning two or more will get you on your way to a business. You might want to start off with some HTML training and begin building web pages. CSS is a good choice too, helping you with the design side of things. Coding isn’t too hard to pick up – it’s so easy that a child can do it. I took an HTML course in college and it was really cool!!!

Accounting and Bookkeeping

These might not seem like particularly technical skills. After all, everyone can do a few sums if they need to. However, today’s accounting and bookkeeping involve not just understanding the concept of how to manage your accounts but also a lot of software and tech tools. As you grow your business, you might get someone else to run your accounts for you. But until you can afford to do that, you’re likely to have to do it yourself. Getting a firm grip on your chosen software, which might be cloud-based, will help you keep everything straight.

Graphic Design

Graphic design skills are by no means essential, but they can be very useful. When you’re just starting your business, it can get expensive to ask a professional every time you need even a small graphic made for you. But you don’t want to underpay somewhere, and attempting graphic design without the right skills can end in disaster. It doesn’t take long to learn how to make a basic image and develop some design skills. You can even find applications that make it much easier to put an image together. I highly recommend using Canva.

Entrepreneurs need to be great communicators using a variety of methods. You might have to talk to someone in person or over the phone sorted, but the technical stuff is important too. From email and instant messaging to using various apps and making video conference calls, getting to grip with communication technology can do a lot for you as an entrepreneur.

Single moms who want to be entrepreneurs should look into tech skills if they want to set themselves up for the future. You could go a long way with the right skills, whether you focus on one of them or use them as complementary skills. Another skill that is necessary but basically a no-brainer is social media.  You will want to be an expert in that department, no matter what your business is.

I hope this has helped you in continuing your mompreneur journey! Please share this post and make sure you’re subscribed to my sweet as sugar mailing list!

How Much Does It Actually Cost To Start A Business?

How much does it cost to start a home business? |

Hey mamas,

Many of us single moms wish we could start our own business so we can have more time home with our children instead of leaving them to work outside of the home, we should not have to abandon our children to earn a living. Our place if with our kids and starting up our own business is just the way to do it. But how much does it actually cost to do this? Keep reading to learn to find out.

How Much Does It Actually Cost To Start A Business?

The main thing that puts people off starting a business is the amount of startup capital that you need. The general opinion is that you need a huge amount of money that most people couldn’t save, even if they stuck to a strict budget for the rest of their life, but that’s not actually true. In fact, most businesses startup with under $10,000 and a lot of them do with less than $5000. Heck, most mompreneurs start their business for nothing! I did! That’s a much more realistic goal but the amount of money you need is dependant on the type of business that you want to start. If you’re considering starting up your own company, here is a guide to help you work out how much startup capital you’ll need.

Depositing money in a piggy bank |

If you’re starting a business that is fairly cheap to get going then you might be able to save up all the money yourself, but most people tend to borrow at least part of it. Working out how much you can afford to borrow will help you decide how much you need to save yourself. A revolving line of credit is probably the most sensible way for a small business to borrow money. The bank will set a top limit and you can withdraw money as and when you need it as long as you don’t exceed the limit. This is much better than taking out the loan as a lump sum because you’re only taking what you actually need. You can use a line of credit to cover a lot of your general running costs so you don’t need to save up as much money for that. A lot of banks and other credit unions actually have programs specifically for single moms!!! So definitely do your research and find the best way to go about this.

Office Space

Hiring office space is one of the biggest costs for any business, so running the business from home is the answer. This is the best way to make yourself available for your kids 24/7. The rise of remote working and cloud technology means that your employees can often do their jobs from home as well, so you don’t need to factor in the costs of hiring an expensive office space. Boom baby!

Room For Growth

Room for growth is one of the things that is often overlooked when people are calculating how much money they need to save before starting a business. Most people save enough money to fulfil small amounts of orders for the first few months until they become profitable enough to cover all of their running costs. That’s fine in most cases but what do you do if you exceed expectations and suddenly get a huge windfall of orders? You need to capitalize on that opportunity but if you don’t have enough money to produce all of those products, you’ll miss out. You’ll probably end up borrowing more which isn’t a sensible move this early on in the business. Work out your production costs and then save some extra that you can keep aside just in case.

Woman in home office |

These are the main things that you’ve got to consider when saving money for a startup, but one thing that people often forget about is paying themselves. You’ve still got to cover all of your normal living costs now you aren’t working so remember to factor in a wage for yourself. I hope this has helped you on your journey to becoming a mom boss! The Little Touches Of A Busy Mom

Hey there mamas, hope you’re having a fine day!

We as busy moms can sometimes lose sight of the small things, and forget how much the little touches we provide actually matter to our kids. So today let’s talk all about these important little touches. Read on!

The Little Touches Of A Busy Mom

For a lot of mothers who juggle with the difficulties of managing a business and the challenges of looking after a child, there is nothing more heartbreaking than hearing your child complain about the lack of time you’ve got for them. Unfortunately, for a lot of mompreneurs, time is exactly what they struggle with on a daily basis. While every mother will tell you their child is their first priority and that they would always drop everything to look after a sick child, there are many situations where children may wrongly believe that your career is the priority. So it’s important to make sure that you’ve organized your life in such a way that your child knows he or she is what matters the most to you and that they are always in your heart. As a busy single mom, you need to be smart about how you show your affection, especially because your time is an essential part of your ability to generate the only income. With also being the only parent, your time is so much more important.

Their bedroom, their style

If you’ve been looking for an idea to treat your child, you can already forget about buying more toys or clothes. Indeed, you need to help them to create a space that is theirs at home, namely with a bedroom makeover. The bedroom can be a reflection of their personalities and tastes, and more importantly, it’s a way to show that you respect their choices. While you can surprise them with a fully planned project, it’s best to involve them from the early stages of the decor research until the selection of the furniture. As their mother, this will show them that you value their opinions. Read my post all about how to gift your kids with the best bedroom makeover ever! Click here!

Don’t let business trips come between you

Your career can sometimes take you out of town for a couple of days. If this is the case, and even though you know you can rely on a relative or a friend to look after your child, it’s important to plan something for each day. For instance, you could record your voice on a CD with professional sound mastering from a company such as Nationwide Disc for them to listen before going to bed. Or you could make a small DIY doll each time you have to spend a night away. Being apart from you is a big deal with a child, so you need to show that you still think of them.

Record yourself reading their favorite story

Quality time every day

Finally, at the end of the day, you may just want to relax in peace. But you need to block in your busy schedule time to cultivate your bond with your child. Creating quality time doesn’t mean that you can’t work during the day. This is why working from home is always the best choice for moms, but it’s still important to remember that you just need to put aside your business and household duties every evening for one hour to dedicate this time entirely to your child. Your time together can become a routine. It doesn’t have to be long if you’re busy. But you need to maintain a bond through games, reading or simply a chat about your respective days.

Busy mom with son -spending quality time |

Bonding while busy with home business management is never easy. But you’ll find that showing your child that you value their opinions, maintain a connection even when you’re away and make a point of spending time together when you’re at home can go a long way. Finding the work/mom balance isn’t always easy, but it’s worth the effort, always. Give this post a like, or share and remember that on this crazy single mom journey, you are never alone! 🙂

So, You Want To Be A Mompreneur? Avoid These 3 Mistakes

Become a mompreneuer, avoid these 3 mistakes |

Hey Mamas, How’s it going?

Are you currently or are you looking into becoming an awesome mompreneur? Then this post is so for you!

So, You Want To Be A Mompreneur? Avoid These 3 Mistakes

There’s no greater or nobler calling in life than being a parent. But if there’s one thing that parenthood does to a woman, other than giving her a profound sense of love and purpose that she had never previously thought possible, it’s giving her renewed sense of perspective. Motherhood represents a complete and irrevocable change to a woman’s psychology and the myriad of things that used to keep her awake at night simply pale in comparison to the sense of duty, responsibility, and accomplishment that comes with being a Mom. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that many women are reluctant to return to the workplace, especially against a backdrop of prejudice, discrimination, and mistrust toward new mothers.  It’s even more difficult as a single mom, our place is home with our children, otherwise, there will be no parent to actually raise them. So, insert amazing new mompreneur title here!

mompreneur |

In lieu of returning to work, many new or single mothers opt instead to develop their own businesses, thus becoming… mompreneurs. The women who choose to do this are trailblazers and should be commended for taking their futures (and those of their families) into their own hands. That said, the path of the momtrepreneur is perilous and full of pitfalls. In order to be a successful mompreneur, it’s vitally important to steer clear of these common mistakes…

Failing to find the balance

Like any self-employed person, a mompreneur walks a fine line in giving both her child and her business the attention they deserve, finding new routines to suit their dual role. Nearly all new mompreneurs dedicate too much time to their nascent businesses. While the first year of any business is a period of unparalleled hard work, but most new entrepreneurs don’t have to balance their commitments to their businesses with safeguarding another little life.

As a result, many new mompreneurs find themselves losing sleep, taking too little time to themselves and inevitably burning out.

Taking too much on themselves

Any business, especially a new business, wages a constant war against escalating overheads. Employees are one of the biggest overheads for a new business, and it can be tempting for new mompreneurs to try to do everything themselves. This is, however, the epitome of false economy. Taking on too much yourself will impede your business’ growth and make the who enterprise lonelier and more stressful than it needs to be.

A strong team will make your business a more enjoyable endeavor while facilitating real and lasting growth. If you’re hard pressed for cash, consider recruiting within the pool of Moms with whom you mix socially. They may appreciate the opportunity, even if you can’t pay them too much at the start. You can collaborate with them using free collaboration software like Slack and Asana and give them pay stubs using a check stub maker. When you’re business grows to new heights, you’ll be glad to have your team behind you.

Failing to outsource

Once again, the understandable desire to drive down overheads can lead to some wrongheaded decisions. While entrepreneurs are dynamic and multi-talented people, it’s important to realize that you can’t do everything yourself and some things are best left to the professionals. Digital marketing, for instance, may seem easy for the social media savvy but while nearly everyone knows how to create a presence and cultivate a following on social media, an outsourced digital marketing consultant will be able to help convert your online following into profitable business interest.

Avoiding these 3 missteps will be huge when creating your own home business. Always remember that you are doing something amazing, brave, and ultimately, what is best for your family. I hope these insights will help you soar high on your mompreneur adventures.
