How To Keep Your Child’s Teeth As Healthy As They Can Be

How to keep your child's teeth as healthy as they can be! | neveralonemom.com

Hiya mamas, what’s skakin’ bacon?

Does your kid love to brush his or her teeth? Do they jump up and down squealing with excitement at the mention of flossing? No? I didn’t think so. Read on for the best ways to keep your child’s teeth healthy, your kid’s enthusiasm not guaranteed.

How To Keep Your Child’s Teeth As Healthy As They Can Be

Our teeth are important, there is no denying that. And, because our teeth are so important they need to be tended to and kept as healthy as they can be at all times. And, because your child is not yet in a position to either have the facilities to keep his or her teeth healthy or even have the desire to do so, the job of doing so falls to you.  For advice on how to keep your child’s teeth as healthy as can be,  let’s dive into some expert tips.

First of all, know when to start

You may think that you should only begin tending to your child’s teeth when their first tooth appears, but if you think this then you are wrong. No, you should start tending to your child’s teeth way before their first tooth appears in their mouth because, even as soon as they are born, your child will have 20 primary teeth, some of which are even fully developed, in their jaw.

To tend to these teeth that you cannot see, even before your baby begins teething, try running a damp (but very, very clean) washcloth over and around their gums — doing so will help to clear any bacteria that may prove to be harmful as teething occurs and teeth appear. And, once your child does get teeth make sure to begin brushing them with a specially designed infant toothbrush as delicately and as soon as possible, using clean water and a bit of non- fluoride toothpaste that measures no bigger than a grain of rice when you do so.

Second of all, know when to see a dentist

As important as it is to tend to your child’s teeth yourself, you will have to hand over the reins of doing so to a pediatric dentist at some point, and the time for doing so should come around the time of your child’s first birthday. You should do this because, first and foremost, it will provide you with all the help and information you need in regards to proper brushing and flossing techniques before it is too late and you become stuck in incorrect ways. Secondly, by making visits to the dentist as early in your child’s life as you can (once they have got teeth, that is) you will make it far more likely that any problems that may have arisen in your child’s mouth that you are not professionally trained to spot will be able to be diagnosed. Thirdly, making your child aware of the dentist and what happens when they are in the dentist’s chair as early in their life as possible will make them far more comfortable in regards to it as they grow, and this can be vital in instilling the importance of visits to the dentist in them as they mature.  I made the mistake of waiting too long to take my son to the dentist, I had not been myself in more years than I’d like to say and was just beginning to finally go get some much-needed work done so I decided to wait until all of my visits had been paid before I took him in which was too long of a wait and every month he now has to have visits, much for everyone’s dismay. So get your kid in now!

Your child’s teeth are important, and it is down to you to tend to them. So, get tending to them, get them down to a dentist and get their teeth looking and feeling as healthy as they can be! Good luck!

How To Be A Marvelous Role Model For Your Children

How to be a marvelous role model for your children. | neveralonemom.com

Howdy mamas!

Once again I’m proud to bring you another awesome collaborative post on a topic that is very important. Being a better role model for our kids is something we all need to work on, so stay with me and feel free to jot these ideas down to better implement them going forward.

How To Be A Marvelous Role Model For Your Children

As a single parent, you are the number one and sometimes only role model for your child. They, of course, think you are wonderful and idolize you (until they hit puberty that is!)  They will soak up your attitudes, behaviors and views like a sponge. And it’s for this reason we should be very aware of the kind of example we’re setting for our kids, they are observing and learning even the most subtle of our ways. Here are just a few of the ways we can be a good role model and help them to develop healthy and productive behaviors which will be useful to them later in life.

Be a better role model for your kids | neveralonemom.com

Eat Healthily

Kids are generally picky about food, that isn’t new information for anyone who has kids! However they might refuse things now but in time are likely to go on to mirror your behaviour and food habits. Seeing you filling up on healthy, delicious meals and making good choices will eventually become ingrained in them. Don’t make mealtimes feel stressful or chaotic, try them with new ingredients and if they refuse don’t make a huge deal of it. Try it again in a few weeks, kids tastes can change in a very short space of time and even their mood can determine how open they are to tasting new things. Getting kids involved in the kitchen is a good way to encourage healthy eating and if they’ve helped to make it they’re more likely to try it.

Be Financially Savvy

Having kids is expensive, and being a single mom does not make it any easier, so getting yourself into the best position financially is always worthwhile. You could look into how to consolidate debt, how to boost your savings and how to budget better to get yourself on track. When you have your money in order you’ll be far less stressed from scrimping and saving and trying to make ends meet. Teach children the value of money, instead of giving them pocket money let them earn it. Simple chores such as tidying their room, feeding a pet or loading the dishwasher will make them feel as though they’ve made an effort for it which can make them think more carefully before spending. It also teaches children the old adage ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’, when they ask for things they can appreciate that work has been put in to earn it.

Read Books For Fun

Children reading books can improve language, develop empathy, enhance concentration, teaches them about a range of topics and can encourage a thirst for knowledge. It’s far more beneficial than playing computer games or watching tv, and so anything that gives them an interest in books and learning is a wonderful thing. Let them see how reading can be for fun and not just something they ‘have’ to do for school. Reading is great for adults too, it provides a fun escape, helps your memory and lots of other great psychological benefits. Read books for your own wellbeing, in doing so you show children that this is a great way to spend your free time. And of course, read with your children too.

Be Social

Haha, say what? Yeah, I know…but listen. There’s nothing wrong with being introverted, I am a very socially awkward introvert so this idea is terrifying. However, there are a lot of benefits that come from being confident and sociable. It makes it easier for children to develop friendships, express themselves and not be held back by insecurity. Take your children to groups and activities where you can both socialize with other children and adults. If they see you treating people respectfully and with manners, it’s a good way to encourage them to do the same. Introverted mamas unite!

Are you ready to take on the world ahead as a more confident single mom? I sure hope so. Go be the best role model you can possibly be. Your kiddos will (hopefully) thank you later in life.  Give this post a like, comment & share!

A collaboration 🙂

Much love, peace out.

Help! My Kid Has An Undiagnosable Health Issue

Hey mamas!

There is something I wanted to bright up on the blog today in regards to health issues in our kids.  It’s not always fun to talk about and can be a bit controversial for some. But if you have ever said  “Help! My kid has an undiagnosable health issue!” Then this post is for you. Continue on for some helpful tips.

health issue | neveralonemom.com

Help! My kid has an undiagnosable health issue

Did you know that there are lots of health issues that doctors simply cannot diagnose? Fibromyalgia is a brilliant example of this. While this is technically a diagnosis, it’s also a cop-out. You see fibromyalgia is a diagnosis given to anyone experiencing unexplained chronic pain anywhere in the body. The young and the old can develop this condition and doctors have no idea what causes it or even how to treat it. So, for all intensive purposes, if you hear this word from a doctor, they haven’t diagnosed you with anything at all. It’s their way of saying: “we don’t know.”

Unfortunately, a non-diagnosis like this can be incredibly frustrating for parents, particularly if it’s their kid who has the health issue. It could be causing them discomfort or the symptoms might seem to suggest something sinister. Here’s what to do if you find yourself in this situation.

Don’t Panic!

Nine times out of ten an undiagnosed health issue is going to be nothing. We can look at the example of blackouts. Your child might be having an issue with every so often almost losing consciousness. When speaking about it with you, they might have described the world going dark and their muscles feeling weak. Immediately, you’re jumping to horrific conclusions from a brain tumor to a serious mental condition. However, this symptom can also be caused by a growth spurt. If kids are growing at a phenomenal rate, it can cause an issue like this, so there’s no need to always jump to the worst conclusion. Simply bring it up with your Pediatrician.

It Could Be An Allergy

Doctors can’t always diagnose an issue as an allergy, and they certainly won’t be able to tell you what’s the cause of the reaction. That’s why you need to speak with allergy specialists. An allergy can present itself in very weird and wonderful ways from a rash to hair loss to a fever. It’s enough to scare any parent half to death but once you figure out what your kid is allergic to you’ve already won half the battle. Let’s just hope it’s not the beloved family pup.

It Will Probably Go Away By Itself

Most medical symptoms do disappear without any help from a doctor or even medicine within about two weeks. That’s why if symptoms aren’t changing or getting worse you should wait about two weeks before you go and consult a doctor. The chances are that it’s nothing and there are lots of examples of things on the body that popup for basically no reason at all like petai. These are little red dots about the size of pinpricks that can pop up for a variety of reasons and are hardly ever sinister. For instance, a few months back my son had little warts popping up all over his body and I could not figure them out, but it turned out to only be harmless molluscum warts which are very common and no big deal. They go away on their own and don’t stick around for long. Whew! I was really beginning to worry about them. So in cases like this, it’s best to not freak out right away.

As you can see then, an undiagnosed health issue even for your child doesn’t need to send your blood pressure skyrocketing. Stay calm and remember that most medical issues have simple explanations even if they can’t be diagnosed straight away. If in doubt make sure you speak to a second doctor. It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion because while one doctor might be stumped another might know exactly what’s causing the issue.

Stay calm and mom on!

Alternative Halloween Activities

Alternative Halloween activities | neveralonemom.com

Hey there mamas!

So it’s October, and for most families, that means getting excited about Halloween. But not all families celebrate Halloween or at least are not as into it as others.  In light of this, I will be sharing with you some awesome alternative Halloween activities that will leave you and your kinds just as happy and sugar induced as any ‘traditional” Halloween activity.

This post may contain an affiliate link. *

My family and I have never really celebrated Halloween.  It’s something we feel as Christians is not appropriate.  Halloween has become way too commercialized and way too scary in very real ways.  People don’t seem to realize that dressing up as a gruesome monster or a devil, is not cute or innocent.  I have never been comfortable with the idea of Halloween, there’s just something wrong about the whole thing and I have never understood why people are so into it and act like it’s such a fun thing. I do not see the appeal of putting up ugly, scary looking decorations, having blood on things, chopped up body parts, and ghosts etc. These things are all too real in our world and the influences are just too much.  But since it is such a huge holiday and we can’t keep our little ones from being exposed to the ideas of it, finding other ways to celebrate the season and have some fun with snacks and costumes or other exciting things is a great way to go. Here is my list of the best alternative activities to do instead of a traditional Halloween.

  • Harvest Party. – This is my personal favorite, as you can invite your friends and family, have some good food, delicious desserts and decorate with pretty fall flowers and enjoy the crisp weather together. You can always do costumes too if you want! Make them more fun, and less spooky and gruesome.  When I was growing up, our community had a Hoe Down at a friends family ranch, we had warm apple cider, a bonfire, and great food and fellowship. It was a great way to spend an October evening. Some of the little kids would come in costume, usually Bible characters or simple things like a cowgirl, or a fireman. We had music and sometimes games like bobbing for apples, or pumpkin bowling.  You can get super creative and have lots of fun with something like a Harvest party. If you’re not up to hosting, take a look in your community and see if there is one you can attend!
  • Pumpkin Carving Contest –  This is a fun idea if your kids love carving pumpkins! Last year was our first year ever carving a pumpkin and it didn’t turn out very well, but hey, we tried! Turn it into an event by inviting your favorite people, having some coffee, cider, and pie having everyone carve their own pumpkins and holding a contest! It’s sure to be a blast!
  • Corn Maze & Hay Rides – One of the best things about fall are the simple things that bring joy to both us moms and kids. Going on a nice hayride or getting lost in a corn maze are classic fall activities that you can enjoy anytime in October or November. Places like pumpkin patches offer such adventures or you could really go all out and create ones yourself in your own backyard! That’s bound to impress your peeps!
  • Church Events – most churches usually offer some type of alternative Halloween event for local families.  Whether it be Trunk or Treats, or a harvest dinner, there is usually something fun to go do at your local church. Check it out and see what they will be up to this year!
  • DIY Escape Room – Have you ever heard of or been to an escape room? Do you or your kids enjoy thrills, puzzles and being tested on the clock? Then this might be the perfect activity for you! It may take some time and materials to put together, but with a little hard work and creativity you will end up with a really fun original way to get scared on Halloween that doesn’t involve anything creepy or dead! My friends and I are actually putting one together for the youth group! So exciting! If you don’t know what you need or know where to begin when tackling a project like this, Pinterest becomes your new bff! There are kits you can buy and put together, or you can start from scratch with a few sheets, maybe a wood board or two, props, lights and your own imagination.
  • Just For The Kids – If you’re a tired mama and not really feeling like getting too involved then just keeping things simply might be best. Letting your kids have a small sleepover where you let them eat lots of sugar, letting their imaginations go wild by having them build their own candy pizza, watch a fun movie and do fall-related arts and crafts! Take a walk outside and collect pinecones, leaves, twigs and whatever else they fancy and just let them have fun.  Make a wreath for the front door or let them come up with some ideas. Just have a simple fun night at home with some friends having some good old-fashioned fall fun.

If you are on the lookout for costumes because your little ones just can’t do this time of year without them, then you have got to check out this site! Click here

Inspired yet? I hope so! Now go have yourself a fun and fabulous fall!

Oh, and before you go, if you scroll through my blog you will see I have been awarded one of the top 50 mom blog spots from http://www.feedspot.com! I’m so honored and excited! Check out the site and support us mama bloggers!
